The liver is essential to life. The functions of the liver include:
- Regulates digestion
- An essential component of blood sugar

- Creates hormones
The liver is 5% fat. When it reaches 10% fat the diagnosis of fatty liver or hepatic steatosis is given. The symptoms of hepatic steatosis are:
- Hardly detectable
- Found by blood tests
- Or, after a swollen abdomen, an ultrasound
Fatty liver is often reversable. Stopping alcohol consumption, fast food, and high glycemic index foods is critical.
